Panchakarma treatment in Kerala is much regarded and preferred, and has remained to be a major attractive element for people all over the world. Panchakarma is a stream of Ayurvedic treatment that is practiced and performed to detoxify and make one’s body free from toxins. At Samwarthika Ayurveda Hospital in Kerala, India, we help our clients reap the best benefits out of Panchakarma treatment. Panchakarma as the name suggests, i.e, ‘Pancha’ which means 5, and ‘Karma’ which means actions, are five methods of actions performed following Ayurveda to get the desired results. These 5 actions are performed to purify your body from harmful toxins. The primary objective is therefore to expel these undesirable toxins from one’s system. These 5 bio-cleansing karmas are Vamana (emesis-for Kaphaja associated disorders) dosha, Virechana (purgation-Pitha associated disorders), Vasthi (enema-Vatha associated disorders), Nasya (nasal drops-head and neck associated disorders), and finally Raktamokshana (bloodletting-blood associated disorders). Apart from these 5 procedures, Panchakarma also has 3 major stages of treatment. They are Poorvakarma, Pradhanakarma, and Paschathkarma. Poorvakarma is performed before the main treatment which is the Pradhanakarma and finally, Paschathkarma which is done post-treatment.
Vamana means to induce vomiting in a person. It is a bio-cleansing measure meant to eliminate various impurities that get accumulated in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, Vamana is a treatment of choice in Kapha disorders. The procedure has to be performed in the morning. In addition to that, the medicines for Vamana have to be administered in a proper measurement to one’s age, strength, constitution, season, etc. After the procedure, the patient is advised to clean their mouth and face with warm water. A semi-solid diet preferably rice gruel is recommended to be given to the one under strict Pathya/diet.
Virechana is the procedure in which the vitiated doshas are eliminated through the anal path. This is the treatment of choice for Pitha predominant conditions. The medicine for purgation is to be taken by the person early in the morning. It will be better if they are on an empty stomach. The patient is advised to drink warm water in small doses in regular intervals till the urge for evacuation completes. Finally, when the evacuation of the bowel is completed, it is recommended that the patient gets to rest. The patient is then allowed to take medicated rice gruel.
Vasthi is the procedure by which the medicines are held in suspension and administered through one’s rectum or genitourinary tract using Vasthi Yanthra. It is the most important procedure among the other Panchakarma procedures and therefore the most appropriate remedial measure for Vatha dosha. A patient is requested to lie down in a particular position. The nozzle of the Vasthi Yanthra is gently inserted into one’s anal canal up to the desired length. Further, the herbal medicine mixture is later gently squeezed in with uniform pressure. The patient is later on allowed to lie down in a supine position till he or she feels an urge to excrete. Next, after the evacuation of the bowel, the patient may take a hot water bath and then maintain a semi-solid diet.
The process of administrating medicated oil through the anal or genitourinary route is called Snehavasthi. This can be given daily and is harmless. Matravasthi is the method of administration of medicated oil in a small dosage. It is a type of Snehavasthi and its indications are quite similar to that of Snehavasthi. Likewise, the dosage may vary according to the disease condition, patient’s condition, etc.
The process of administration of medicines through nostrils is called Nasya. Nasya is mainly indicated in aggravated and accumulated doshas of the head and neck. Oil in a slightly warmer form is instilled in the prescribed dose for each nostril. A gentle massage is to be performed on the plantar and palmer regions, shoulder, and back. The patient is later allowed to spit if they feel any discomfort due to the presence of oil in the throat. Besides, the patient is advised to take complete rest after this process. Gargling with hot water and Dhoomapana - which is the inhalation of medicated smoke through one’s mouth - is advised in some cases after the Nasya treatment.
Rakthamokshana is the procedure of eliminating impure and toxic blood from the patient’s body by using either leech/Jalooka, puncturing the vein (Siravedham) or oozing out blood with special instruments (Sringam/Couping therapy).

With more serious health conditions, it is better to seek the advice of our expert Panchakarma practitioners.
