Lumbar Spondylosis is a degenerative condition of the vertebrae which results in the narrowing of the space between adjacent vertebras which may further lead to the compression of the nerve fibers. Lumbar spondylosis is the term given to normal wear and tear of the lumbar (lower back) spinal discs. As we age, spinal discs lose moisture and shrink, bone spurs develop, and bones because weaker. Lumbar Spondylosis is an important clinical, social, economic, and public health problem affecting the population worldwide.
Ayurvedic View
Katigraha mentioned in Ayurveda can be correlated with Lumbar spondylosis due to the similarity of clinical manifestations. Katigraha is a condition where the lower back region is afflicted with Vitiated Vata and presents with symptoms such as pain with stiffness. According to the Ayurveda, Shoola (pain) occurs due to the vitiation of Vata Dosha. Vata Dosha is vitiated by Srotas Awarodata (obstructions of channels) and Dhathu Kshaya (depletion of tissues/malnutrition). In Kati Shoola Apana Vata is mainly involved. So, the treatment aims to pacify vitiated Vata Dosha, especially Apana Vata. Lumbar spondylosis was treated with samanya chikitsa of vata vyadhi i.e.Abhyangam, Swedanam, Vasthi ,Kati Vasthi, Kati Dhara, Podi Kizhi, Ila Kizhi, Thaila Dhara, Njavara kizhi, etc.
